–Twenty-Three–

Sacri had her basket full of flowers and walked through Alex’s camp. She was surprised to see that the friend Alex called brother was back.

Wali measured a board and dropped it when he saw her. “Holy hell. You must be Sacri.”

“I am. You enjoyed the Healing Chamber?”

He inhaled deeply and glanced around. “The dreams I had were weird. I saw my death.”

“This is common.” She dropped the flowers and felt his head. He was fevered. His skin wasn’t well. Explained why so many healers were suddenly in the area. Such a sickness would have them curious. “This is a painful illness that has the healers confused.”

He ignored her. “Who brought me there?”

“Silver wanted to thank you for bringing Lacey here. He was impressed you did so without being challenged. He thinks it must be because you had everyone so wound up, they didn’t notice her. He hoped the healers could help you feel better, but he says it wasn’t good news.”

“And where are you going with these flowers?”

She had more than flowers. The white clay was very rare and she couldn’t wait to work it and pray over it.

“To make Alex paint. I had to travel far for these.” She pointed out the wonderful red onions. “He’ll love the onions and their skins will make purple.” She expected him to laugh but he winced.

“Do me a favour and wait to give it to him until after I die.” He looked solemn so she nodded. “And be careful. After his parents died, he broke everything he owned. Smashed it all. Then when he lost Mattie, he sank into a depression. I had to drag him home several times from the pub after he’d got in fights he had no hope of winning.” He took a deep breath. “I worry about him. He feels pain and anger too deeply. He’s too hard on himself for no reason. Of course, the painting helps and I carved with him, too. I’ll teach you how. He needs to keep his hands busy doing something worthwhile. It’s about having control of things.”

She liked how he understood his friend so well. “Did he hit you?” She’d had a man swing at her once while grieving.

“No. It’s more God he blames and when he drinks he fights to get back the control.”

“Thank you for teaching me.” She bowed and gathered up her things to dry them out.

Wali called after her, “I saw it.”

“What?” She faced him.

“Love. I saw passion in his eyes when he spoke of you. So…don’t get dead on him, because he can’t lose us both.”

“We are both here, Wali. If you live your days worrying about what others will do without you, you won’t be enjoying the moments you have with them.”

“Yeah, but still I worry.”

“My father told me that when I worried, it was because I needed something to do, so he found me work to make the worry stop.”

“Good plan. I have a fire-ring to make. I want to leave him something worthwhile. You’re a smart one.
